Land Connections

Land is identity, expressed in time. - Jenny Odell

We are a nation of people largely living in locations that are not our native ancestral places of origin.  How does this fact affect our understanding of the land and of belonging?  The pieces in this exhibit contain clays foraged from sites where my ancestors once lived and worked.  Like many Americans, their history was marked by repeated relocations - leaving behind defunct iron works near Cedar City, depleted mines near Eureka, and mills and farms in a search for new opportunities.  Although the sculptural materials are sourced from specific locations, the pieces explore the universal emotional experiences of movement, migration and the desire for a place to belong.

Exhibition pieces use clay from Iron County, Washington County, Utah County, Weber County and Tooele County in Utah, along with other sites in Montana, Oregon, and Pennsylvania. See Available Work page for purchase.
